Mary Nyaruai
Founder & Inventor, Nyungu Afrika
A former mobile journalist turned inventor, Mary creates plant-based
period care that lets women take control of what they use,
without costing them their health or the planet’s. She leads
Nyungu Afrika day-to-day, supported by expert advisors and a community
of local farmers, makers and testers.
Mary started Nyungu out of her own frustration, and that of thousands
of women who shared the same experience of irritation, heat rash and
itching from conventional period products.
When that frustration surfaced through a viral hashtag, she saw a
need and set out to fill it. In researching the problem, she found
that many conventional period products contain toxic chemicals,
metals and pesticides that don’t belong near our bodies or our
planet.
Nyaruai is an inventor and an activist at heart. Beyond developing a
kinder period-care line, she campaigns for comprehensive menstrual-health
education and free period products in public institutions.
